Keeping your passport valid is one of the most important steps for travel planning, yet many travelers overlook it until it’s too late. Good news: renewing a U.S. passport is straightforward when you know your options and eligibility — and there’s now a way to do it online for many travelers.

Here’s everything you need to know about renewing your passport — by mail or online — so you can stay ready for your next getaway.
Can You Renew Your Passport Online?
Yes — the U.S. State Department has rolled out an online passport renewal system, allowing eligible adults to complete the process digitally without mailing in a paper application.
Online renewal is currently available for:
U.S. citizens or residents
Passports that were valid for 10 years
Passports issued within the last 15 years
Passport holders age 25 or older
Renewals where no personal information (like name or gender) needs to be changed
Applicants with no international travel planned in the next ~8 weeks
If you don’t meet those criteria, you can still renew by mail using Form DS-82 — see below.
Renew by Mail (Most Common Option)
If you can’t renew online, you can renew your passport by mail — and most people do this.
You are eligible to renew by mail if:
Your passport is undamaged (aside from normal wear)
It was issued when you were age 16 or older
It was issued within the last 15 years
Your name hasn’t changed (or if it has, you can document it)
How it Works
Complete Form DS–82 online or by hand.
Include your most recent passport.
Add a passport photo that meets official requirements.
Include the appropriate passport renewal fee.
Mail it via a trackable service so you can see where it is.
You do not surrender your current passport until it’s processed, and it will be returned separately once your new passport is mailed.
How Long Does Renewal Take?
Whether you renew online or by mail, standard processing times are typically about 6–8 weeks for routine service.
If you need your passport urgently, expedited options (for a fee) can shorten processing to 2–3 weeks, and urgent same–day service may be available by appointment at a passport agency for emergencies.
Tips to Avoid Common Passport Renewal Mistakes
Here are a few things travelers often overlook:
Check Your Eligibility First
Make sure you qualify for the method you choose (online vs mail). Eligibility rules are strict — if you don’t fit the online criteria, you’ll need to renew by mail.
Get Your Photo Right
Passport photos must meet specific size and style guidelines and are usually taken within the past six months. Failure to meet these standards can delay your renewal.
Plan Ahead
Passport processing takes weeks — and during peak travel seasons, times can stretch even longer. Apply early, especially if you’re traveling in the next 6–12 months.
Beware of Scams
Only use official government websites ending in .gov when renewing. Third–party “expedite” sites often charge extra and are not affiliated with the U.S. State Department.
Summary
U.S. passport renewal is easier than ever — and now, many eligible adults can renew entirely online. If you don’t qualify for online renewal, mail–in renewal using Form DS–82 is still available and widely used.
Staying on top of your passport validity will save you stress — and help you travel with confidence whenever inspiration strikes.
